The Green Rooms vs The Industry Standard
This isn't a comparison with the worst builders out there — it's a fair look at where we differ from the typical specification you'll find at a similar price point.
✓ The Green Rooms
SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) throughout — the same system used in Scandinavian passive-house construction. Rigid, warm, and acoustically superior.
Typical Alternative
Most competitors use timber stud frame — cheaper to build, but significantly worse for insulation, soundproofing and long-term stability.
✓ The Green Rooms
EPDM rubber or metal panel roofing with a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee on every build.
Typical Alternative
Many builders use felt roofing — it's cheap, but typically fails within 10–15 years and is not covered by meaningful guarantees.
✓ The Green Rooms
Thermo Ayous, Cedar, Charred Spruce, Hardie Plank, Millboard or Thermo Ash. All chosen for their 30+ year lifespan. We never use Redwood.
Typical Alternative
Budget cladding (including untreated Redwood) is common in the industry. It looks fine initially but warps, splits and discolours within a few years.
✓ The Green Rooms
Mains-connected consumer unit, full circuit testing, and a signed electrical certificate on every single build.
Typical Alternative
Many suppliers provide a basic spur connection or no dedicated consumer unit — which may not meet building regulations and can create issues with insurers.
✓ The Green Rooms
Fully plastered internal walls, fitted flooring and skirting boards as standard — move-in ready from day one.
Typical Alternative
OSB boarding or basic lining is common at lower price points. You'll need to hire additional trades to finish the interior yourself.
✓ The Green Rooms
Ground screw foundations as standard — no digging, no concrete, suitable for slopes, and removable if you ever move.
Typical Alternative
Concrete pad foundations are most common — cheaper to lay but permanent, require excavation, and can crack on poor ground conditions.
✓ The Green Rooms
Our own team of employed carpenters, installers, electricians and plasterers. One team, one build, one point of contact.
Typical Alternative
Subcontracting is widespread. The company you spoke to may have minimal involvement in the actual build.
✓ The Green Rooms
Fully turnkey. Foundations, structure, cladding, glazing, electrics, flooring, plastering, and site clean-up. Price agreed, price paid.
Typical Alternative
Many quotes exclude groundworks, electrical connections or interior finishes — which then arrive as additional costs after you've committed.
